Boiler Not Heating Your Home? A Vancouver Repair Guide
A cold home, one cold heating zone and a boiler fault code are different problems. This guide helps you describe what is happening and request the right repair assessment.

First, identify what has stopped working
When you need boiler repair in Vancouver, start with the pattern: is the entire home cold, only one floor affected, or is heating working while domestic hot water is missing? A boiler is part of a system that may include pumps, zone controls, thermostats and a separate hot-water cylinder. The boiler itself is not always the only item that needs attention.
Write down when the issue began and whether it followed a power interruption, thermostat change or recent service. Record any visible display message before changing settings. A photo of the model label and screen is more useful than a description such as “the red light is on.”
A checklist for describing the problem
| What you notice | What to record | What to ask the contractor |
|---|---|---|
| No heat anywhere | Thermostat reading, heating request and exact boiler message. | Will the diagnosis cover the appliance and the heating controls? |
| One floor stays cold | Which rooms work and which thermostat serves the cold area. | Will the affected zone and circulation be checked? |
| Boiler runs, rooms stay cool | Whether every room is affected and whether this is new. | How will heat delivery through the system be assessed? |
| Visible leak or changing gauge reading | Where the water appears and the displayed reading, from a safe position. | What should be left off or avoided until the visit? |
| Hot-water problem only | Whether all taps are affected and what equipment supplies them. | Does the appointment include the domestic hot-water equipment? |
These observations organize the service call; they do not identify a failed component. Do not add water, adjust gas controls or change pressure settings based on a generic online number. The correct procedure depends on the equipment and installation.
Fault codes need the exact brand and model
IBC, Navien, Rinnai, Super Hot and Viessmann use different controls, and manuals can differ within a brand. A code is a starting point for diagnosis, not permission to replace a part. For example, IBC’s VFC user manual describes model-specific display messages and service records. Use the manual that matches your appliance. See the IBC VFC example.
Our Viessmann WB1B fault-code guide and Super Hot common-problems guide explain their scope. For other models, request a service assessment with a clear photo of the rating label.
Ask for a documented repair scope
Before booking, confirm the diagnostic charge and availability. Before approving a repair, ask what failed, what work is included, whether parts need ordering and what warranty applies. If more than one issue is found, ask which work is essential now and which can be planned.
Technical Safety BC’s boiler servicing checklist includes safety controls, venting, system pressure, the expansion tank and circulation-related checks. It also recommends annual servicing. Ask what applies to your model and request the findings after the visit. Read the boiler service guidance.
Boiler repair questions
Why is one zone cold when the boiler is running?
The observation points the assessment toward that zone, but it does not prove which component is responsible. Report the thermostat setting and the rooms affected so the contractor can test the relevant controls and heat delivery.
Can I keep resetting a boiler error?
Do not use repeated resets to keep a faulting appliance operating. Record the message and follow the matching user manual or the attending contractor’s instructions.
Does boiler maintenance replace a repair visit?
If the system has already stopped heating, report it as a fault. Explain any current symptoms when booking maintenance so the correct visit and time allowance can be arranged.
