A furnace breakdown does not automatically mean you need a new system. Start with a diagnosis, then compare the repair, the condition of the equipment and what a new installation would actually solve.

Get the diagnosis before deciding
If you are searching for furnace repair in Vancouver, you probably want two answers: can the heat be restored, and is the repair worth doing? Ask the technician to identify the fault, explain the evidence and separate immediate work from optional improvements. “It is old” is background information, not a complete diagnosis.
Keep the model number, approximate age, maintenance records and any previous repair invoices together. Describe whether the furnace fails to start, stops partway through a cycle or leaves particular rooms cold. Those details help frame the assessment without guessing which part has failed.
Compare the repair and installation proposals

A small, well-defined repair on an otherwise serviceable furnace is a different decision from repeated faults with uncertain parts availability. Ask for both options when the repair is substantial. Avoid treating a universal age cutoff or percentage rule as the answer for every home.
Do not overlook airflow and room comfort
If the main complaint is a cold upstairs bedroom or uneven temperatures, include that in the scope. Ask whether the assessment covers the thermostat, blower operation, airflow and the distribution system. A new appliance quote should explain how the original comfort complaint will be addressed.

Should you compare a heat pump at the same time?
If you also want summer cooling, ask for a separate heat pump option. BC Hydro explains that heat pumps can provide heating and cooling, with ducted and ductless designs for different homes. Ask each proposal to state the heating plan, any backup equipment and the assumptions behind estimated running costs. A claimed saving is only useful when you can see the electricity rate, gas rate and usage assumptions behind it.

Yes. Keep the original diagnosis and quote so the next contractor can understand the concern. Follow any safety shutdown instructions while arranging the assessment.
