A heat pump quote should explain what your home will receive, how it will be heated in winter and what the total project includes. Use this checklist to compare proposals before committing.

Why two heat pump quotes can be different
If you are researching heat pump installation costs in Vancouver, the first challenge is comparing the same job. One proposal may serve the whole home; another may cover selected rooms. One may include electrical or duct work; another may leave it as an allowance.
A useful estimate identifies the equipment, the areas served and the completed installation scope. This guide does not set a universal installed price. Your existing heating system, layout, access and proposed design need to be assessed before a firm project price is meaningful.
Ask how the system was sized
Ask for the home’s heating and cooling requirements and an explanation of how the proposed equipment meets them. Natural Resources Canada publishes a toolkit specifically for air-source heat pump sizing and selection. That supports a more considered discussion than choosing a unit from floor area alone. Tell the contractor about planned insulation work, rooms that are hard to heat and any suite or addition. Ask whether the proposal covers those areas and whether the design assumes other heating equipment remains in use.
A checklist for comparing the complete installation

Ask the contractor to mark each item as included, optional or excluded. A short equipment quote and a complete installation proposal are difficult to compare until these details are visible.
Will it heat your home during a cold spell?
Ask about the proposed model’s capacity at the outdoor temperatures used in the design, rather than relying on a generic “works in the cold” claim. BC Hydro advises considering the home’s heating load, the equipment’s cold-weather performance and whether supplemental heating is needed. Read BC Hydro’s selection guidance.
For a ducted system, ask how the existing ducts were assessed. For a ductless proposal, ask how each occupied area will be served. If backup heating is included, request a plain-language explanation of when it operates and how the controls coordinate it.
Keep rebate eligibility separate from the base quote
Check current program rules before committing. BC Hydro’s heat pump rebate page sets eligibility, equipment and installation conditions, including the use of an HPCN member for that program. The provincial Better Homes tool identifies programs using details such as the home, existing heating and household circumstances. Check BC Hydro’s current requirements and use the Better Homes rebate finder.
Ask which program is being proposed, what must happen before work begins, which documents you receive and who submits the application. Keep the full installed price visible alongside any estimated incentive; an advertised maximum is not an approval for your home.
How to assess a running-cost claim
If a proposal forecasts lower bills, ask for the assumptions: existing fuel use, current rates, equipment performance and how much backup heat is expected. Also ask whether the comparison includes cooling that you did not previously have. Without that context, a single savings percentage is hard to evaluate.

Does every home need an electrical panel upgrade?
Have the existing electrical capacity and proposed load assessed. Ask what work is required for your design and whether it is included in the quote; do not assume an upgrade is either always necessary or never needed.
Can I keep my furnace?
Ask whether a compatible dual-fuel design suits your goals and what it means for controls and program eligibility. Compare that complete proposal with any suitable all-electric option.
What should I prepare for an estimate?
Your city, home type, current heating fuel, equipment details and rooms needing better comfort. Bring any strata requirements and tell the contractor about planned renovations.
